For some easy tests you can try the ARM Linux zips on these two pages:
   http://www.ctrlterm.com/
   http://www.turbocontrol.com/easyfpgui.htm

Just download directly on your BeagleBone, extract, open a terminal, and 
compile.  Nothing to install!
