Your message sounds to me as if the real problem 
was the change detection not working properly 
rather than anything else, so I'd suggest to file 
a bug report for that instead of asking for a 
changed default for automatic saving...

Furthermore, I believe that having fp.ini 
specifying your preferred behaviour stored in 
~/.fp should solve the problem with default 
values.
