the obvious and simple answer is to not use digests ;)

it is much easier to handle individual messages as such rather than having to 
remember to trim all of X out and Y and Z, too... and then to address it this 
way as opposed to that way, etc...

i've never used digests in the 20+ years i've been messaging in all the various 
formats available specifically because of that...
