You are over exaggerating a bit. Macros are used all over the place
with great success. FPC, Lazarus IDE, MSEide and many CLI tools to
name just a few.

Where are macros define... the project file, or overridden/defined via
a command line parameter. The norm would be inside the project file or
ini file, or whatever file fpdoc uses to read settings - like it now
does.
