agreed... i really wanted to leave it out of my previous suggested rewrite of 
the error message but i didn't...

Makefile:2704: *** The /only/ supported starting compiler is 2.6.2. You are 
trying to build with 2.7.1. You CANNOT do this! See this FAQ:
