[fpc-pascal] Is LNET dead?

Hi,

Based on the LNET website
[http://lnet.wordpress.com/usage/dependencies-system-requirements/] it
seems that LNet is pretty much abandoned software. It still references
Lazarus 0.9.24 and FPC 2.2.0 which are both rather old - or maybe the
website is just very outdated?

------------------------------------
LNet 0.6+

    Lazarus 0.9.24+ and FPC 2.2.0+

    Status: Beta

Issues: Completely tested on Windows (WinXP), Linux (Ubuntu 7.10).
            FastCGI considered broken for now.
------------------------------------

I need to do some TCP/IP communications using SMTP (client), FTP (server
and client), HTTP (client) and later NNTP (client, but maybe server in
the future). No Lazarus LCL dependencies please.

It seems my best choice for usage with Free Pascal is LNET or Synapse.
LNET seems easier to use (nice event style coding), but Synapse seems a
lot more active project. The last thing I want to do is invest in
another dead product [Kylix comes to mind].

Anybody got info on LNet and Synapse projects, and your opinion on what
would be a good/safe choice?

PS:
Yes I know LNET 0.6 doesn't include NNTP support (looking at their
website), but I am willing to invest time in implementing it, if LNET is
a viable option.

My immediate needs are the SMTP and HTTP client support.
