Just use writestr ?

program testw;

type
   mytype = (a,b,c);

var
   d : mytype;
   s : string;

begin
  d:=a;
  writestr(s,d);
  writeln(s);
end.

This works in trunk, and I think that even str() works with enumerateds in
trunk.
