If you have installed the midnight commander (mc), you could try the
builtin editor. 
You can also call it seperately with "mcedit filename".

This editor can do syntax-highlightening for Pascal. And in the
midnight commander itself, you can define makros to compile with fpc.

mc is included in Slackware and its well suited for slow machines.
