I can now, after building a new compiler without smartlinking.
The compiler I was using, dated 2002/7/24 would not cycle a new compiler with
smartlinking enabled.  After cycling with smartlinking turned off and
updating my compiler from that, it will now make cycle.

Obviously a bug in the older compiler.
