The fact is that the 8bit AVR (Atmel) chips are well supported and more 
than just "some cent per piece" cheaper, and they work with a wider 
voltage range then any 32bit chip out there (without expensive circuitry 
to get the same voltage "agnostic"). They are the base, in form of the 
ATmega328(P) and ATmega32u4 MCUs, for the most common Arduino boards and 
their derivatives, the Arduino Uno and Arduino Leonardo. Very common, 
and very cheap... ;-)
