My exeperience seems to confirm this.

I ran the same tests with Lazarus install on a NAS.

As the connection was 2xGigabit (port-trunked), read/write speeds were 
higher than my local HHD.

Yet, rebuild times doubled.

It seems latency plays a more significant role than thoughput.
