It is not, for the same reason all redundancy is not stripped from natural
languages either.  It improves reading speed and integrity at only a small
cost.

They work perfectly fine.

I don't see the need for them. I can see the logical ones being implemented
for ease of conversion in e.g. compression code, but I never use them.
