I think what Joost is saying is that since D7, IBX has been dropped (I think) and dbExpress is the replacement. By default there is no driver for Firebird with dbExpress, but you can purchase 3rd party drivers for dbExpress+firebird.

CodeGear is _considering_ (not final yet) adding Firebird support in post-D2009 releases due to popular demand.
