Borland has done this before; for example I remember free Kylix and C++
downloads. The reason is simple: Amateurs help a lot in making a
technology useable in the enterprise. This was the case with Turbo Pascal
and Delphi, but is for example also true for other technologies like PHP.
With Turbo Pascal, they sold it for very friendly prices, often below 100
EUR. However, that was before the internet and the open source revolution.
They believe a free download is nowadays the best way to serve the amateur
community.
