BTW, the kernel on the devel mips box has the option "Algorithmics/MIPS 
Emulator" enabled (as otherwise debian refused to run), this probably 
explains why testsuite mostly succeeded whereas FPU is actually not 
present there.
IIRC this is essentially the only relevant change from default openwrt 
kernel I had to make, so I'd bet you are right.
