Thanks Thomas, that fixes it (I wish I hadn't spent quite so long 
agonising over what I'd done wrong before asking). I find I also have to do

make OPT='-Fl/usr/lib/sparc-linux-gnu' install

otherwise I get a similar error (at 2.6.0).
