I don't know whether it's formally, but the compiler contains enough 
code to automatically detect the c libary (from the set of supported c 
libraries) you are using. It doesn't even matter whether you're cross 
compiling or not (though the first requires some further options so that 
the compiler detects the library of the target system and not your own). 
I personally use that feature for a small uclibc based Linux system of 
mine and so far(!) it works.
