Thanks Jonas, work continues and I'll report back.

Is there a way of getting FPC to report its build parameters? For 
example, if I say  fpc -i  to 2.4.0 I get

..
Supported ABI targets:
   DEFAULT
..

but it doesn't actually say what the default is.
